JLPT N5 Grammar: ～をほしがっている – Expressing Someone Else’s Wants

📘 Meaning & Usage

The pattern ～をほしがっている describes what a third person wants. It uses the dictionary form of ほしい plus がっている.

Structure:

• Person + が + Noun + をほしがっている
• Verb (stem) + たい + がっている (for third person)

Note: Do not use ～たい for others; use ～たがっている.

💡 Example Sentences

• 子どもが新しいおもちゃをほしがっている。
  The child wants a new toy.
• 彼女はコーヒーをほしがっています。
  She wants coffee.
• 友達が休みをほしがっている。
  My friend wants a vacation.
• 弟はゲームをしたがっている。

• お母さんが写真を撮りたがっている。
  Mom wants to take a photo.

📝 Grammar Notes

• Use ～をほしがっている for noun desires; ～たがっている for verb (“want to do”).
• “がっている” shows observed desire; speaker infers from behavior.
• Cannot directly ask third person about their own desires with this form.
