JLPT N5 Vocabulary List (Part 2)
Welcome back to our JLPT N5 vocabulary series! In this second part, we introduce 15 essential Japanese nouns commonly used in daily life and in the JLPT N5 exam. Each word includes the Kanji, Hiragana, Romaji, English meaning, and real-life example sentences.

お兄さん | oniisan | older brother (someone else’s) | あなたのお兄さんは何歳ですか? Anata no oniisan wa nansai desu ka? – How old is your older brother? |
お姉さん | oneesan | older sister (someone else’s) | お姉さんは大学生です。 Oneesan wa daigakusei desu. – My older sister is a university student. |
おばあさん | obaasan | grandmother / old woman | おばあさんはやさしいです。 Obaasan wa yasashii desu. – My grandmother is kind. |
おばさん | obasan | aunt | おばさんにプレゼントをあげました。 Obasan ni purezento o agemashita. – I gave my aunt a present. |
お風呂 | ofuro | bath | 毎日お風呂に入ります。 Mainichi ofuro ni hairimasu. – I take a bath every day. |
お弁当 | obentou | bento (boxed lunch) | 母が毎日お弁当を作ってくれます。 Haha ga mainichi obentou o tsukutte kuremasu. – My mother makes a lunchbox for me every day. |
おまわりさん | omawarisan | police officer | 道に迷って、おまわりさんに聞きました。 Michi ni mayotte, omawarisan ni kikimashita. – I got lost and asked a police officer. |
音楽 | ongaku | music | 音楽を聞くのが好きです。 Ongaku o kiku no ga suki desu. – I like listening to music. |
女の子 | onnanoko | girl | かわいい女の子が遊んでいます。 Kawaii onnanoko ga asondeimasu. – A cute girl is playing. |
外国 | gaikoku | foreign country | 来年、外国に行きたいです。 Rainen, gaikoku ni ikitai desu. – I want to go abroad next year. |
外国人 | gaikokujin | foreigner | あの人は外国人です。 Ano hito wa gaikokujin desu. – That person is a foreigner. |
会社 | kaisha | company | 父は会社で働いています。 Chichi wa kaisha de hataraiteimasu. – My father works at a company. |
階段 | kaidan | stairs | 階段を使って上に行きます。 Kaidan o tsukatte ue ni ikimasu. – I use the stairs to go up. |
🧠 Vocabulary Notes
- おなか: Frequently used in phrases like おなかが痛い (I have a stomachache).
- お兄さん・お姉さん: Use these when talking about someone else’s sibling or politely referring to your own in public.
- おまわりさん: A friendly and respectful term for police officers, especially used by children.
- 階段: Be careful not to confuse with 会談 (kaidan) which means a formal talk or meeting.
