JLPT N5 Grammar: の – Possessive / Nominalizer

📘 Meaning & Usage

The particle is used in two main ways:

  1. As a possessive particle: to show ownership or relationship (like “’s” in English).
  2. As a nominalizer: to turn phrases or verbs into nouns to refer to an action or object.

Structures:

  • Noun1 の Noun2 – Noun2 belongs to or relates to Noun1
  • [Verb/Adjective Phrase] + の – turns the phrase into a noun (nominalization)

💡 Example Sentences

  • わたしの ほん です。
    It’s my book.
  • これは せんせいの くるま です。
    This is the teacher’s car.
  • ねこ の みみ は かわいい です。
    A cat’s ears are cute.
  • たべるの が すき です。
    I like eating.
  • あなた の が いちばん です。
    Yours is the best.

📝 Grammar Notes

  • connects two nouns: the first noun describes or possesses the second.
  • As a nominalizer, の turns phrases into noun-like expressions for actions or descriptions.
  • Can also be used for explanation in casual conversation, often at the end of a sentence (mostly in female or child speech).
