๐ŸŽ JLPT N5 : How to Express Giving and Receiving in Japanese

In Japanese, actions of giving and receiving are expressed using three key verbs:

  • ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™ (agemasu) โ€“ to give (to others)
  • ใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใ„ใพใ™ (moraimasu) โ€“ to receive
  • ใใ‚Œใพใ™ (kuremasu) โ€“ to give (to me or someone close to me)

๐Ÿงฉ 1. A ใฏ B ใซ N ใ‚’ ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™ โ€“ A gives B something

This structure is used when someone gives something to another person.

Structure:
A ใฏ B ใซ N ใ‚’ ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™
= A gives N to B

Examples:

  • ใ‚ใŸใ—ใฏ ๅ‹ใ ใกใซ ใƒ—ใƒฌใ‚ผใƒณใƒˆใ‚’ ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™ใ€‚
โ†’ I give a present to my friend.

โ†’ The teacher gave a book to the students.

Note: Use ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™ only when the speaker is giving something to others or someone else is giving to a third party. Do not use ใ‚ใ’ใพใ™ when someone gives something to the speaker.

๐Ÿงฉ 2. A ใฏ B ใซ / ใ‹ใ‚‰ N ใ‚’ ใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใ„ใพใ™ โ€“ A receives something from B

This pattern is used when someone receives something from another person.

Structure:
A ใฏ B ใซ / ใ‹ใ‚‰ N ใ‚’ ใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใ„ใพใ™
= A receives N from B

๐Ÿ’ก You can use either ใซ or ใ‹ใ‚‰, but ใ‹ใ‚‰ emphasizes the source more.

Examples:

  • ใ‚ใŸใ—ใฏ ๅ‹ใ ใกใซ ใƒ—ใƒฌใ‚ผใƒณใƒˆใ‚’ ใ‚‚ใ‚‰ใ„ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

๐Ÿงฉ 3. B ใฏ A ใซ N ใ‚’ ใใ‚Œใพใ™ โ€“ B gives something to A (the speaker)

Use ใใ‚Œใพใ™ when someone gives something to me or to someone close to me (like a family member).

Structure:
B ใฏ (ใ‚ใŸใ—ใซ) N ใ‚’ ใใ‚Œใพใ™
= B gives N to me

Examples:

  • ๆฏใฏ ใ‚ใŸใ—ใซ ใ‚Šใ‚“ใ”ใ‚’ ใใ‚Œใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
