These sentence patterns are essential for beginners learning Japanese and are frequently used in daily conversations. Mastering them will help you form polite requests, talk about what you want to do, describe ongoing actions, and more.

1. Vます + ましょう – Let’s do something

Meaning: Suggesting to do something together.

• いきましょう。– Let’s go.
• たべましょう。– Let’s eat.
• べんきょうしましょう。– Let’s study.
• うたをうたいましょう。– Let’s sing a song.
• コーヒーをのみましょう。– Let’s drink coffee.

2. Vて + ください – Please do something

Meaning: Making a polite request.

• まってください。– Please wait.
• みてください。– Please look.
• ここにすわってください。– Please sit here.
• ゆっくりはなしてください。– Please speak slowly.
• なまえをかいてください。– Please write your name.

3. Vて + います – Be doing something / State

Meaning: Describing an ongoing action or a state.

• いま、しごとをしています。– I’m working now.
• ほんをよんでいます。– I’m reading a book.
• かれはでんわをしています。– He’s talking on the phone.
• せんせいはクラスでおしえています。– The teacher is teaching in class.

4. Vて + もいいです – May I? / It’s okay to…

Meaning: Asking or giving permission.

• ここですわってもいいですか。– May I sit here?

5. Vては + いけません – You must not / You cannot

Meaning: Prohibition.

• ここでたばこをすってはいけません。– You must not smoke here.
• クラスでけいたいをつかってはいけません。– You must not use phones in class.
• このへやにはいってはいけません。– You can’t enter this room.
• このほんをもっていってはいけません。– You can’t take this book.

6. Vないで + ください – Please don’t do something

10. Nが + あります / います – There is / I have
