📘 Meaning & Usage
The grammar expression ~とは言っても is used when you acknowledge something as true, but add a contrast or a subtle objection to it. It translates to: “Even though I say that…” or “Having said that…”
Translation: Even though I said…, nevertheless… / Having said that
Form:
- Phrase + とは言っても
Function:
- To lightly contradict or add a nuance to a previous statement
- Similar in meaning to “but still” or “nonetheless”
- Common in both spoken and written Japanese

- 日本語が話せるとは言っても、敬語はまだ苦手です。
