📘 Meaning & Usage

The grammar expression ～とは言っても is used when you acknowledge something as true, but add a contrast or a subtle objection to it. It translates to: “Even though I say that…” or “Having said that…”

Translation: Even though I said…, nevertheless… / Having said that

Form:

• Phrase + とは言っても

Function:

• To lightly contradict or add a nuance to a previous statement
• Similar in meaning to “but still” or “nonetheless”
• Common in both spoken and written Japanese

💡 Example Sentences

• 日本語が話せるとは言っても、敬語はまだ苦手です。
  Even though I say I can speak Japanese, I’m still not good at keigo (polite speech).
• 旅行に行くとは言っても、日帰りだからね。
  Even though I say I’m going on a trip, it’s just a day trip.
• 便利とは言っても、使い方を間違えると危険です。
  Even though it’s convenient, it can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
• 彼は若いとは言っても、しっかりしている。
  Even though he’s young, he’s very reliable.

📝 Grammar Notes

• とは言っても comes after a fact or opinion, and adds contrast.
• It often translates as “That may be true, but…”
• Can also be written/spoken as とはいっても (less formal spelling).
