📘 Meaning & Usage

The patterns ~としたら / ~とすれば / ~とすると are used to express assumptions or hypothetical situations. They are often translated as “if,” “supposing that,” or “assuming that.”

  • ~としたら: Imagines a situation and assumes it as true.
  • ~とすれば: Focuses slightly more on the conditional relationship.
  • ~とすると: Focuses on consequences or results from that assumption.

Form:

  • Plain form + としたら / とすれば / とすると

Used when:

  • Talking about hypothetical scenarios
  • Making logical assumptions
  • Discussing what would happen in a certain case
