📘 Meaning & Usage
The grammar pattern ~たい is used to express the speaker’s desire to do an action. It attaches to the ます-form stem of verbs.
Structure:
- Verb (stem) + たい – “want to [verb]”
Example: 食べます (tabemasu) → 食べたい (tabetai) “want to eat”
💡 Example Sentences
- 日本へ行きたい。
にほんへ いきたい。
I want to go to Japan. - 寿司を食べたい。
すしを たべたい。
I want to eat sushi. - 映画を見たいです。
えいがを みたいです。
I want to watch a movie. - 新しい本を読みたい。
あたらしい ほんを よみたい。
I want to read a new book. - もっと日本語を勉強したい。
もっと にほんごを べんきょうしたい。
I want to study Japanese more.
📝 Grammar Notes
- ~たい behaves like an い-adjective, so it conjugates: ~たくない (negative), ~たかった (past), etc.
- You can make it polite by adding です: 行きたいです.
- Only the speaker’s desires are expressed with ~たい. To talk about someone else’s desire, use ~たがっている.
