📘 Meaning & Usage
The patterns ～としたら / ～とすれば / ～とすると are used to express assumptions or hypothetical situations. They are often translated as “if,” “supposing that,” or “assuming that.”
- ～としたら: Imagines a situation and assumes it as true.
- ～とすれば: Focuses slightly more on the conditional relationship.
- ～とすると: Focuses on consequences or results from that assumption.
Form:
- Plain form + としたら / とすれば / とすると
Used when:
- Talking about hypothetical scenarios
- Making logical assumptions
- Discussing what would happen in a certain case
💡 Example Sentences
- もし明日雨だとしたら、ピクニックは中止ですね。
If it rains tomorrow, the picnic will be cancelled. - 彼が犯人だとすれば、なぜ逃げなかったのか？
If he were the culprit, why didn’t he run away? - この結果が正しいとすると、計算方法に問題がある。

📝 Grammar Notes
- Often paired with
もしfor clarity in conditionals. ～とすればand～とするとare slightly more objective and formal than～としたら.- Different from ～たら・～なら in that it implies more speculation or logical deduction.
